We are writers seriously dedicated to the process and content of our writing. Some of us work professionally as writers (I'm a developmental editor) and also have different creative genres of writing that we are working on (novels, scripts, essays, memoirs, travel writing, and more). Others work in different professions but have writing projects they are deeply committed to. We also consider the publishing industry and marketing. As your organizer, I have many years in the publishing industry ( …
Meet kindred book lovers in a local Meetup Book Club! We read classic fiction, current fiction, and nonfiction paperbacks, rotating through these genres each month in a three-month cycle. Read a new book every month. Come to discuss the book, share stories, and make new friends!
Small groups will get together to read aloud to one another and appreciate the written and spoken word (and simply have a good time). Each person brings a short selection (fiction, poetry, nonfiction, whatever). Folks also bring drink and nibbles to share. Fancy or not. Meetings will vary; formats will evolve. My small kitchen will be the setting for some events; perhaps others will volunteer their kitchens as well. We may also decide to have thematic events, such as reading appropriate selectio …
There are several Meetup book clubs in the East Bay, but many of them are specialized (e.g., women-only, we only read such-and-such books, etc.), or their meetings fill to capacity so fast that I never get a chance to rsvp - so I decided to start this one. I previously participated in a fantastic book club in Chicago, which gave me the opportunity to read some great books that I probably wouldn't have found on my own. I hope to continue that trend here! This is a mixed-gender book club for anyon …

Sex in literature transports us from the silly to the sublime, providing erotic entertainment and ideas that stir our soul. Not purely focused on erotica, this group will read fiction, and maybe some nonfiction, which includes some noteworthy treatment of sex. Is pleasure itself a tool for spiritual learning? What's hot and what's not? What does Haruki Murakami's "metaphysical mind-bending" writing tell us about the nature of reality and the transformative role of sex? Let's dig into some great …

The East Bay Documentary Filmmaking Support Group (analogous to a writing group) consists of a select group of East Bay documentary filmmakers that meet once or twice a month to review, discuss, and provide critical feedback of members' works-in-progress. The documentaries can be in any phase of the production (conceptualization, brainstorms, reviews of treatments, research, scripts, proposals, assemblies, rough cuts, fine cuts etc). The purpose of this group is to support, motivate, and see our …
This group is for folks in the East Bay/Oakland area who want to read the works of this American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic James Baldwin, then gather together and discuss what we read. For such a long time I, Sharon, have had a fascination with the work of this amazing writer, his vision and the clarity of expressing that vision. Join us in a reading/discussion group exploring one of the major American voices of the 20th century. We will work our way through "The Pr …
This club is intended for those in the Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Cupertino areas who love literary criticism for fiction and creative nonfiction. Each month we'll choose a book to read for the next month. The group will not focus on a single type of literary criticism, but rather on the range of appropriate types. In addition there will be a time during the meeting to express what you took away from reading the book. Depending on the venue for the meeting, we will have different restrictions …

I've been devouring some really interesting books recently and would love to talk with people about them. Hoping to create a group of people that meets regularly, engages in critical thought and opens up our exposure so that we get people from different viewpoints, or maybe even read contrasting authors at the same time.
